November 28th, 20140248This is a longitudinal view of a normal kidney seen in ultrasound. It has a smooth outline with a hypoechoic cortex. The central hyperechoic structure is the renal hilum, containing mainly the renal pelvis, blood vessels, lymphatics and fat. A normal kidney measures 9-12cm in length in adults.
November 28th, 20140153This is an ultrasound image of the kidney with hydronephrosis and a grossly dilated pelvi-calyceal system. The normal hyperechoic area in the center is replaced by ballooning of the renal pelvis and widened calyces . The cortex is still preserved here.
November 28th, 20140446This is a plain CT abdomen of the same patient. This series of images shows bilateral hydronephrosis and hydroureter (arrow). Further caudal images revealed extension of the obstruction down to the vesico-ureteric junction. There were no radio-opaque stones identified. This patient had carcinoma of the prostate leading to obstruction of...
November 28th, 20140175The CT image on the left shows a staghorn stone in the left kidney. Staghorn stones are large calculus found in the calyceal system extending into the calyces, which gives them an appearance similar to that of the horns of a stag (deer). There is associated hydronephrosis and hydroureter. On the right side, the hydroureter is caused by...
November 28th, 20140143This is a plain CT abdomen of a patient who has polycystic kidney disease. Her kidneys are enlarged with innumerable cysts. Her abdomen is too distended rendering her unsuitable for peritoneal dialysis. She is therefore receiving haemodialysis. Occasionally, these patients require nephrectomy for symptomatic relief, infection or bleeding...
November 28th, 20140154This is a contrast CT scan of the abdomen. There is a complicated cyst measuring 2.0x2.4 cm with mixed cystic and solid components in the anterior aspect of the mid pole of the right kidney. Nephrectomy was performed. The lesion was confirmed to be a renal cell carcinoma. The other cystic lesion in the posterior right kidney is a benign...
